The following are staggering statistics on the prevalence of ABI in the criminal justice system:<\/p>\r\n\r\n

    \r\n
  1. There are over half a million Ontarians living with a brain injury, with 45,000 cases being added annually. (8)<\/li>\r\n
  2. Traumatic brain injury is highly prevalent among jail and prison inmates and those who have come into contact with the criminal justice system. (10)<\/li>\r\n
  3. As many as 100% of incarcerated adults have a reported history of brain injury. (3)<\/li>\r\n
  4. For youth, the rate is estimated from 16-72%. (5)<\/li>\r\n
  5. Adverse early life experiences are common for persons with a history of brain injury and incarceration particularly for criminalized women. (2)<\/li>\r\n
  6. An Ontario study found that men and women who sustained a brain injury were about 2.5 times more likely to be incarcerated than men and women who had not sustained one. (7)<\/li>\r\n
  7. Another study, based on a random sample of four Ontario prisons, found 50.4% of males and 38% of females reported previous traumatic brain injury.\u00a0 In this study half of the identified women sustained their injury before committing their first crime. (2)<\/li>\r\n
  8. People with brain injuries are 14 times more likely to incur a serious charge and 12 times less likely to achieve discretionary release.<\/li>\r\n
  9. Having a history of a diagnosed brain injury and\/or repeated hits to the head neck or face increases the risk of recidivism by 69%. (9)<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n
