You may have to provide medical documentation about your need for these devices or services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your needs may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you have a mobility issue and require assistive devices to help you get around.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you have a physical disability (invisible) and have trouble standing up or have difficulty sitting still for an extended time.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you need to wear sunglasses due to light sensitivity (the lighting in courtrooms can be very harsh).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you have noise sensitivity and need noise cancelling headphones.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abijustice.org\/brain-injury-community\/printable-tools\/#1601199267833-c7e75369-977b\"><u>Any self soothing strategies you use<\/u><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you require an interpreter\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you need communication support, talk to your lawyer about a communication intermediary. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdacanada.com\/resources\/access-to-justice-communication-intermediaries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><u>https:\/\/www.cdacanada.com\/resources\/access-to-justice-communication-intermediaries\/<\/u><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Learn how to get to court:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Make a plan of how to get to court and do a travel trial there before your actual court date. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?safe=off&amp;source=hp&amp;ei=zD6fX_mtNO2Jggf-2bngAw&amp;q=google+directions&amp;oq=google+dire&amp;gs_lcp=CgZwc3ktYWIQARgAMggIABCxAxDJAzICCAAyAggAMgIIADICCAAyAggAMgIIADICCAAyAggAMgIIADoICAAQsQMQgwE6BQgAELEDOgsIABCxAxCDARDJAzoECAAQCjoFCAAQyQM6BwgAELEDEApQuAxY6xhgzSRoAXAAeACAAViIAa4GkgECMTGYAQCgAQGqAQdnd3Mtd2l6sAEA&amp;sclient=psy-ab\"><u>Use an app to help find your way<\/u><\/a> and \/ or write down directions.<\/li>\n<li>Your paperwork will tell you what courtroom you are in, try and find the room during your trial visit so you know where to go on your actual court date.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you have bus tickets available if you are going by public transit or make alternative travel arrangements (such as a ride to and from court by someone you trust) for your actual court date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Find Extra Support<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask about mental health diversion programs and any other support services i.e. Elizabeth Fry and Salvation Army onsite for support (You can ask your lawyer, call <a href=\"tel:211\"><u>211<\/u><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/bist.ca\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>call BIST<\/u><\/a> to get this information).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask someone you trust for help to create a list of items to bring before hand (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abijustice.org\/brain-injury-community\/printable-tools\/#1601199268737-09640e42-1e1d\"><u>printable checklist of what to bring to court<\/u><\/a>). <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask the person you trust to remind you about your court date.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask someone you trust (a friend, family member or support worker) to come with you to court.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Get everything you need to bring with you to court ready the night before, such as:<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Devices you need to limit triggers such as sound and lighting (headphones, earplugs, self soothing devices, sunglasses etc.) You may need medical documentation to be allowed to do this - advise your lawyer ahead of time about any needs you have.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A lunch or a snack, as you may be in court all day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A water bottle to stay hydrated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bus tickets if you are taking public transit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any medications you may need.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your court binder and any other needed documents, including paperwork which tells you what courtroom you are in.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your accessibility identification card with you to help explain assistance you may require.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>**Remember to**<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Set reminders of your court date on your phone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Allow yourself extra time to get to court if you have a physical impairment which requires more time to walk or if you fatigue easily<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Try to get a good night\u2019s sleep the evening before court.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Come to court ON TIME on your court date.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ea-card  sp-ea-single\"><h3 class=\"ea-header\"><a class=\"collapsed\" id=\"ea-header-20121\" data-sptoggle=\"spcollapse\" data-sptarget=\"#collapse20121\" aria-controls=\"collapse20121\" href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\"><i class=\"ea-expand-icon ea-icon-expand-plus\"><\/i> Courtroom - Potential Challenges and Strategies on How to Deal with Them<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"sp-collapse spcollapse spcollapse\" id=\"collapse20121\" data-parent=\"#sp-ea-2012\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"ea-header-20121\"><div class=\"ea-body\"><p><b>Challenge # 1 Long Wait Times:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are many cases scheduled for the same time frame. Be prepared to wait, as it could be a couple of hours before you are called.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Strategies:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let your lawyer and or support person know if you are leaving the area to take a break.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talk to someone about how you are feeling, scared, nervous etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stay hydrated and well nourished.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Challenge # 2 - Remand<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sometimes proceedings are pushed to another day, which is called remanded and can happen often. The court will provide a new date to come back.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Strategy:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Write down your new date and \/or input in your phone calendar, set an alarm in your phone the day before your court date.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take a picture of the paper with your new court date and tell someone you trust to help remind you about this date. You can also text them the picture.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Challenge # 3 -\u00a0 The Courtroom Environment\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Courtroom is open to the public, people can be walking in and out the entire time. Try rolling the ball across your leg or arm, or squish it between your hands.<\/p>\n<p>Try a variety of squish balls, such as balls that are heavier in weight, different textures, and ones that make noise to see what works best for you.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Coil bracelets and Rubber Bands!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you are distracted easily try wearing elastic bands or coil bracelets on your wrists.
